JAPANESE BOFFINS have managed to get a movie stored and playing back on a preformatted holographic disc.
Holographic discs are capable of storing up to a terabyte of data or 200 times more than a single layer DVD and transfer it back at with a transfer speed of one gigabyte per second or 40 times the speed of DVD.
Although holographic technology has been around for a while, they have been too clunky to be commercialised.
For example they couldn’t come preformatted because the preformatted address pits make too much diffusion noise during read/write and bugger up the quality.
However Optware boffins got around that by putting a dichroic mirror layer between the recording and reflective layers. This blocks the diffusion by the address pits, allowing the recording to take place.
According to the company’s site, here, the holographic DVD will be the same size as the current technology. They also think that there is nothing to stop the product actually hitting the shops now.
The technology was developed by Optware which says it will demonstrate the technology at the COST Action P8 which will be held in Paris on September 16 and 17
