Here is an official reply from Bethesda Technical support that actually fixed the problem i and many other people have been having with the monitor crashing when trying to exit the boat on a ATI Radeon 9000, 9200, 9500, 9600, 9700, or 9800 :

Hello,

If you are having problems with Morrowind on a computer with an ATI Radeon 9000, 9200, 9500, 9600, 9700, or 9800 video card, use the steps below to resolve the problem.

First, visit http://www.ati.com and download and install both the latest
Catalyst drivers and ATI Control Panel.

Next, make sure the latest drivers for the motherboard are installed.
Motherboard manufactures release new software drivers to better improve both performance and stability in Windows several times a year. Downloading and installing these free updates can cure a myriad of problems, including random crashes, odd audio and display problems, and unique error messages. Manufacturers often offer these free updates for download on their website. If you know the make and model of the motherboard, please contact the motherboard manufacturer for the updates. If the machine came pre-assembled (e.g. Dell, Compaq, Gateway, etc), please contact the company that built the computer to ensure the correct update is obtained and installed.

Once this has been done, download and install the latest version of DirectX. This can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/.

Finally, use these steps below:

- Click Start, the Control Panel.
- Double click the Display icon.
- Click the Settings tab.
- Click the Advanced button.
- Click the SMARTGART tab.
- Click the Retest All button.
- Click Apply and reboot the system when prompted.

Once this has been done, Morrowind should work fine.

ben j ai encore trouve un truc, ils parlent pas de prob de cartes 3d :

If Morrowind is crashing during the character creation process, first try downloading and installing the 1.2.0722 update to Morrowind. To download the 1.2.0722 patch for Morrowind, please use the steps below.

- Visit http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm.
- Click the link labeled "Morrowind_v1.2.0722.exe (3.9 MB) 07/22/2002"
- When asked what to do with the file, click "Save this program to disk"
- When asked where to save the file, select the Desktop.
- Once the file is downloaded, double click on the file Morrowind_v1.2.0722.exe
- When prompted if you wish to install the update, click the OK button.
- Once the update is complete, click the OK button that will appear.

Note that the installer may seem to 'hang' or 'lock' when updating the Morrowind.bsa file. This is a larger file and will take several minutes to updated (Upwards of 15 minutes on lower end machines).

Also make sure that the latest software drivers for both the sound and video cards are installed. Most hardware manufacturers, especially for video and sound cards, update their drivers several times a year to correct problems found with incompatibilities with the myriad hardware and software configurations present. It is a good practice to obtain and install the latest version drivers for your sound and video card on a regular basis to insure that you have the latest available fixes and enhancements provided by the hardware manufacturer. Check with the manufacturer of your system or card to obtain the latest drivers. The majority of them have websites where the latest drivers can be downloaded for no charge, along with instructions on how to properly update their particular hardware.

If the problem still exists after downloading and installing both the update and the latest software drivers, please use the steps below to temporarily disable AGP Texture Acceleration in DirectX and lower the resolution in Morrowind to 640x480.

- Click Start, then Run , and type "C:\Program Files\DirectX\D:cool:iag.exe" (including the quotes), then click OK.
- Once the DirectX Diagnostic tool appears, click the Display tab.
- Under the DirectX Feature, click the Disable button next to AGP Texture Acceleration. Answer Yes when prompted to confirm the choice.
- Click the Exit button in the lower right when done.

Next, start a new game and temporarily lower the game resolution to 640x480:

- Press the Escape (ESC) key on the keyboard to bring up the Main Menu.
- From the Main menu, click Options.
- Once the Options appear, click the Video tab.
- On the Video tab, in the box at the top of the window, click the 640 x 480 setting. A message will appear asking if you wish to change the resolution. Click Yes.
- Once the screen has been resized, run through the character creation process until you are able to save. At this point, you may change the resolution back. However, we do recommend that you save and exit the game before changing the resolution back and enabling AGP Texture Acceleration.
