If you delete the "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator", you won't be able to update it automaticaly by restarting windows (instead of other peripherals).
The solution is simple but you need a Win 98 or a Win Me cd (I haven't tried with XP or 2000 one).
You have to open the archive :
(X is your CDROM drive) X:\Win9x\PRECOPY1.CAB
and find the file SWENUM.INF ;
Extract it in a diroctory like C:\TEMP ;
Make the same process for the file in X\BASE2.CAB with the SWENUM.SYS ;
Now in the Control Panel and click ADD HARDWARE.
Windows will look for a new hardware. Say yes, you've already connect it.
Now you have the choice of the new hardware. Now go at the bottom of the list and select add a new hardware ;
Select manual install
Select System Device
Click Have a Disk
select the directory you create like C:\TEMP where the files you extract are.
Windows will find the "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" !!!
