Origines: à l'heure où Billy Corgan s'apprête à se lancer dans une nouvelle aventure avec son groupe Zwan, la page Smashing Pumpkins semble enfin être tournée avec la sortie de ce live composé de titres enregistrés entre 1992 et 1994, c'est-à-dire entre la sortie du 1er album Gish (1991) et celle de Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995)…

Ingrédients: sans fioritures electroniques, Earphoria permet de retrouver les Smashing Pumpkins dans leur période la plus excitante. Disarm, Cherub Rock en acoustique, I Am One, Soma, Geek U.S.A., Mayonaise, solos démentiels, rythmiques tranchées, voix rageuses, mélange de pop, de rock et de metal… on comprend comment le groupe, originaire de Chicago, s'est imposé même si, à l'époque, l'Amérique était tournée vers Seattle, la Mecque du grunge. Un témoignage historique enfin à portée de toutes les oreilles!

The Undercover Review

Earphoria is live album. Earphoria is not a Smashing Pumpkins concert.

Smashing Pumpkins may be long gone (and next year we see Billy Corgan reincarnated as Zwan) but in the meantime Corgan fans have this mish mash of Pumpkins sounds to play with as a morsel before next year.

The songs sourced for this record end at 1994. Corgan has deliberately compiled live performances from the bands early career to focus attention on the creation of the band instead of their superstar years.

What we get is a very unpolished indie sounding Smashing Pumpkins that many will find a rough ride to listen to. 'Disarm' is raw, 'Cherub Rock' stripped back and 'Today' quaint. Their early epic 'I Am One' allows us to feel the origins of the band with distorted guitar and a stretched out performance. For those who remember the early Lollaloolooza performances for instance, this will act as a reminder that you originally loved the Pumpkins for their dynamics and not for their melody. The intensity of 'Silverf***' is another stark reminder of the boundaries of this bound.

The final track 'Why Am I So Tired' clocking in at over 15 minutes confirms the avant guard originality of the band.

Earphoria is not an album for the punters. This is for the tried and true Smashing Pumpkins fans. Reals fans will consider it educational. Passers by will be seldom entertained.
