Being currently a MULT21 student, I would like to write my dissertation under your direction. I understand it has to be a comparative study of the ways different newspapers from English-speaking countries have written about a subject that concerns the United Kingdom, the United States, or Ireland.
I thought the Treaty of Lisbon would be a good topic, as it created controversy at the moment of its ratification in several European countries, namely in Ireland, which intially refused to sign the treaty in 2008.
I would start by explaining the history and the content of the treaty, along with its implications for the inhabitants of Europe.
Then, I would divide my work in three parts. In the first part, I would look for articles in various Irish newspapers dating from before the first referendum in Ireland, and compare their views on it. I could try to draw parallels between their opinion and their political orientation. I would also try to see how they may have influenced the Irish citizens in their decision to reject the treaty.
In the second part, I would analyze more recent Irish newspapers and compare them to the older ones, to see what has changed between 2007 and 2009 in the opinion of the Irish media. I assumed that the economic crisis may have influenced the decision of the people so I could follow that track and try to find a link between these events.
In the third part, I would collect articles from British newspapers and analyze them to see if they were more favorable to the treaty than in Ireland, as the country has always been eurosceptical. I would also compare the content of the articles depending on whether the newspapers are left- or right-wing orientated, as I would do with Ireland. I would also work chronologically.
I could also briefly approach the tendencies in other European countries, but that might be a little off subject.
The aim of my work would thus be to try to identify general trends in newspapers depending on the moment, the country, the political orientation of these papers, and events such as the economic crisis.
I thank you for your attention and I hope that my proposition will retain your attention.
Best regards,
